The airport of Brussels is located only 13km from the capital of Europe. It is located near Zaventem, a Flemish commune. It is the country's largest airport with 17 million passengers per year. The national Belgian air carrier is called Brussels Airlines.
HISTORY OF ZAVENTEM AIRPORT
Zaventem Airport was built in Flemish territory by the Nazis during World War II. The airport was adapted and improved in the late 50s for the celebration of the 1958 World Expo.
Today over 260 airlines operate from this airport. The airport is an issue of ongoing disputes between Flemish and Francophones due to some controversial decisions that have been taken in relation to the area where planes are diverted for taking off and landing.
In 2005 it was awarded the best airport in Europe.
